Sheffield is celebrating after getting a stage closer to the UK City of Culture 2013 title when the department for culture, media and sport (DCMS) announced on 24 February that Sheffield has made the shortlist alongside Birmingham, Norwich and Derry.
It has been an intense bid process involving Sheffield City Council, Creative Sheffield, and Sheffield’s Culture Board which focused on encouraging the city’s people and communities to get more involved in culture. The idea behind the award is for winning cities to gain the right to host a number of key events every four years moving the spotlight away from London.
14 cities put together a bid but thanks to the hard work by all involved, Sheffield clearly demonstrated to the DCMS that the city is a great place to live, visit and invest in. It has been noted that the winner could have the opportunity to host the likes of the Brit Awards and The Turner Prize bringing major economic and reputational benefits to the city.
Sheffield International Venues has hosted its fair share of high calibre and prolific events in 2009 having delivered BBC’s Sport Personality of the Year awards at Sheffield Arena and Ice Sheffield; and global superstars U2 held their 360 degree tour at Don Valley Stadium attracting 50,000 people to the city.
The contest goes on, but with Sheffield boasting exceptional facilities and venues, the city has shown it is more than capable of hosting such prestigious events on offer to the winner of the title.
